Peggy Cheung is our Consultant and recognized as a leading IP practitioner in Hong Kong. She has more than 30 years of experience advising clients on brand protection strategies, complex IP litigation, licensing, franchising, technology transfer, advertising laws and compliance with data privacy laws. She also advises clients on mergers and acquisitions and corporate and commercial disputes.
Peggy holds a number of other professional and honorary appointments, including being an Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Cardiology, panelist of the Asian Domain Name Dispute Resolution Center and the Kuala Lumpur Regional Center for Arbitration, past president and current council member of the Hong Kong Institute of Trade Mark Practitioners (HKITMP), past-council of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA), and honorary legal advisor of the Institute of Cardiovascular Science and Medicine, the Sun Chieh Yeh Heart Foundation, and the Hong Kong College of Cardiology.
Peggy is a Justice of the Peace of Hong Kong and holds a public office as a member of the Estate Agents Authority and serves on the board of the Tin Ka Ping Foundation. She also serves as chair of the Appeal Tribunal (Buildings), chair of the Fishermen Claims Appeal (Trawl Ban) Board, chair of the Appeal Panel (Housing), member of the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal Panel of Hong Kong and an observer of the Independent Police Complaints Council. She was also an adjudicator of the Registration of Persons Tribunal from December 2008 to November 2014.
Professional Activities and Achievements
- Reviewer for the Postgraduate Medical Journal (UK) for medical-legal papers
- Review and commenting on the new intellectual property laws of Hong Kong, in particular, chairing the Trade Marks Sub-Committee and previously served on the Patents Sub-Committee and Designs Sub-Committee of the HKITMP
- Attendance and making oral presentations at Bills Committee meetings of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong on IP related laws and regulations
- Delivered lectures, seminars and presentations on intellectual property laws and licensing organized by the University of Hong Kong, the Intellectual Property Department, the Trade Development Council, the Franchise Association of Hong Kong, the Productivity Council, the HK Design Association, the Law Society and other conference organizers in Greater China (China, Hong Kong and Macau)
- Delivered lectures, seminars and presentations on IP protection, enforcement and licensing in Asia and Europe
- Providing training on IP protection and enforcement to clients’ marketing teams and management personnel
- Designing the Diploma course on Hong Kong Trade Marks Law and Practice organized jointly by the HKITMP and SPACE, lecturing, setting exam questions and marking the papers
- Writing for in-house publications on intellectual property law including Intellectual Property Guide for Hong Kong; the Asia Pacific Legal Developments Bulletin; Famous Trade Marks etc.

- represented the shareholders of a well-established toy company in connection with the acquisition of the business by a U.S. private equity company, and two years later, represented the sellers to buy back the company and all of its assets.
- represented the founders of a life science company in a series of funding and share subscription, and later represented the company in connection with the merger of the business with a billion dollar U.S. biotechnology company.
- represented the patent owner and exclusive licensee in a series of patent infringement litigation in Hong Kong.
- represented the exclusive distributor in arbitration proceedings held in Japan and Singapore and interim court proceedings in Singapore against the manufacturer.
- represented one of the major shareholders of a long-established world leading gloves manufacturer in a shareholders’ dispute and the proceedings brought before the High Court of Hong Kong.
